Social cost of methane

We are currently extending the social cost of carbon work to consider the relative importance of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions. The lifetimes of the two species are quite different, with some portion of added CO2 persisting for thousands of years while CH4 oxidizes with a lifetime of approximately a decade. The relative valuation of their emissions must therefore involve some weighting of near-term vs. long-term harms.

This is an ongoing project, and we will continually post updates as they come.
