Reactions: New Perspectives on Our Nuclear Legacy

Reactions: New Perspectives on Our Nuclear Legacy

An afternoon symposium on Friday, December 1, 2017 designed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Chicago Pile-1, the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear chain reaction. The symposium, which will take place at the University’s Mandel Hall and is entitled Reactions: New Perspectives on Our Nuclear Legacy, will include panel discussions on the impact of nuclear energy on medicine, policy, and national security. Author Richard Rhodes and former United States Secretary of Energy Ernie Moniz will provide keynote remarks. The events on December 1 run from 1:30 - 6:00 P.M. and you are welcome to attend all or part of the program.

The symposium serves as the culmination of a series of commemoration events and activities sponsored by the University and its partners over the course of this Autumn Quarter (please see nuclearreactions.uchicago.edu for complete information). The Nuclear Reactions commemoration includes the exhibit on the history of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists at the Museum of Science and Industry; observances of the anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; a Bulletin symposium on November 6; and, as noted, the December 1 and 2 program. The commemoration has as its goal not only thoughtful consideration of the history surrounding Chicago Pile-1, but also its far-reaching implications that continue to this day.
