Location: Harris School of Public Policy, Room 140C
Dr. Matthew Kahn is Professor at the UCLA Institute of the Environment, the Department of Economics, and the Department of Public Policy. "Blue Skies in China" will focus on a variety of questions for urban growth in China. Over the next few decades, over one billion people are likely to move to Asia's cities. Such individuals seek new opportunities to improve their standard of living. What are the likely local and global environmental implications of this urban growth? If local and national governments anticipate these potential challenges, how optimistic can we be that incentives will be introduced to achieve the "win-win" of economic growth and blue skies? What role will technological advance play in decoupling pollution production from economic activity?
Co-sponsored by the Energy Policy Institute at Chicago with the Confucius Institute at the University of Chicago. Lunch will be provided.
