Surveying Wicker Park for Neighborhood Investment

Today, we traveled up to the northwest side of Chicago to survey census tract 2422 in Wicker Park / Ukrainian Village. The survey went very smoothly, and we were able to cover about half of the tract. It was cold, about 32 degrees, so occasionally we had to go inside a shop to warm up. The students were surprised to find absolutely no vacant lots or abandoned buildings and nary a front lawn.  Well, there were actually a few front yards, but they were only about five by twenty feet. And they were filled in with decorative pavers. The students were still able to assess lawn condition, though, by looking for litter and other signs of neglect.
